Root Canal Q & A

Who needs a root canal?

The pulp is deep inside your tooth and consists of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue. When an infection strikes, it endangers the integrity of that tooth and surrounding teeth. You may think a root canal will be painful, but it alleviates the pain you’re experiencing.

If you have a tooth with infected pulp, you’re at risk of losing the tooth and having the infection spread to your jawbone or other areas of your face, head, or neck.

What symptoms suggest I need a root canal?

Sometimes, an infection hasn’t caused any symptoms yet but is detected at a regular dental visit. Getting a root canal can prevent the development of symptoms, which include:

  • Severe pain
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Discoloration of the affected tooth
  • An abscess or a pimple on the gum around the tooth
  • Swelling of nearby soft tissue, such as your cheeks or gums

The root canal procedure eliminates these symptoms to give you relief and save your natural tooth.

What happens during a root canal?

During a root canal, Dr. Tehrani numbs the area surrounding your affected tooth. She makes a small hole in the tooth and cleans out the infected pulp. Next, she places a solution to discourage further infection and fills the tooth with a rubber-like, biocompatible substance called gutta percha. Then she seals the tooth, and the root canal is complete.

Following a root canal, Dr. Tehrani or Dr. Yi place a crown, or prosthetic cap, over the tooth to protect it and restore function and appearance.

How should I care for a tooth after a root canal?

Immediately following a root canal, you may have slight soreness for a few days, but the severe pain of the infection should be resolved. Over-the-counter pain medications can help soothe any immediate pain.

Long-term care for a root canal is no different than the basic oral hygiene you perform on your other teeth. With twice-a-day brushing, daily flossing, and regular professional cleanings, your root canal can last a lifetime.
