Zoon Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why do teeth become yellowed or discolored?

Your teeth may change color due to several factors. These include:

Aging: As you get older, the enamel on the outside of your teeth thins, revealing the darker dentin within.

Food choices: Certain foods and beverages, such as coffee, tea, and red wine, cause staining.

Accidents: A blow to your mouth may cause the dentin inside to build up, darkening the affected tooth or teeth.

Medications: Some medicines, particularly certain antibiotics-- such as tetracycline and doxycycline -- can cause teeth to darken.

Because of the different reasons why teeth are discolored, not all darkened teeth respond well to Zoom whitening treatments. Make an appointment to find out if your condition will benefit from this chairside method, or to learn about alternative options such as bonding and veneers.

What is the Zoom whitening system?

Zoom is a whitening process performed in the McLean Aura Dentistry office. In less than one hour, your teeth become dramatically whiter.

The team prepares your mouth for the procedure by protecting your lips and gums, leaving only your teeth exposed. Dr. Yi or Tehrani then applies the hydrogen peroxide-based whitening compound, which is activated with a specially-designed, overhead light.

The Zoom light and gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth and break up stains that cause discoloration.

What are the benefits of in-office whitening?

In-office whitening is much faster and more effective than over-the-counter products such as toothpaste or strips. Instead of having to use a product for weeks -- or even months -- you get whiter teeth in just an hour. There’s no mess or fuss involved.

Plus, the in-office process makes every effort to prevent any sensitivity to your gums and other soft tissue. The staff protects your gums, which can sometimes react with sensitivity to whitening compounds.

What are the effects of Zoom whitening?

The hour-long procedure is broken down into four 15-minute sessions which can lighten your teeth by up to eight shades.

The results of the whitening last longest if you avoid stain-inducing foods and drinks, such as coffee and red wine. You can maintain results with at-home methods, such as whitening toothpaste and trays, but you shouldn’t undergo the in-office Zoom system more than once per year.

If you desire a sparkling, white smile, call McLean Aura Dentistry or book an appointment online to learn about in-office Zoom whitening.
